His Interest in neurosciences started early during first year of med school in University of São Paulo (USP) driving him into a 5-year-experience in the neurophysiology lab under the supervision Prof. Cesar Timo Iaria (one of the founders of discipline neurophysiology/neurosciences in Brazil) when he was exposed to stereotaxic method and performed several chronic micro and LFP recording electrode implants in animal models to study brain oscillations in sleep and attention. Right after the medical degree in the same university (1998), started neurosurgery residency program at Hospital das Clinicas in USP under the supervision of Prof. Raul Marino Jr. (1999-2003), followed by a fellowship in Functional Neurosurgery (2004-2007) in the Division of Functional Neurosurgery in the same institution. Conducted the Ph.D. thesis with studies in the mechanism of motor cortex stimulation for pain in the Neurology Department at USP (2007) and won the Young Investigator Ward in the WSSFN Meeting in Rome in 2005. In 2009 he became Ph.D. supervisor (2009-Present) and became preceptor for functional neurosurgery fellowship and organized the first multidisciplinary DBS unit in Division of Functional Neurosurgery in the Institute of Psychiatry at USP having many fellows from different countries in Latin America. Conducted several experimental and clinical studies for different stereotactic, neuromodulation and DBS techniques for movement disorders and neuropsychiatric diseases. Founded the neuromodulation lab in Hospital Sírio-Libânes also in a multidisciplinary context conducting studies in neuromodulation of pain and movement disorders. Received multiple research grants, published several scientific papers, book chapters and conferences in international meetings worldwide. Received the Full Professorship in Neurosurgery in 2012 studying the Effects of DBS in Motor & Non-Motor Symptoms of PD. In 2013, he progressed into the Position of Associate Professor of Neurosurgery in Neurology Dept at USP (2013-present). In 2014 became postdoc supervisor (2014 - present); presently is member of the board of directors in the WSSFN and LATAM and Brazilian Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (SLANFE/BSSFN).

disorders (deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, neuronal recording and microdialysis

Professor Joachim K. Krauss is Director and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery atHannover Medical School, Germany, since 2005.  He received his MD degree at the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg, Germany, for his experimental work in neuropharmacology of the basal ganglia.  He trained in neurology, and later in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and general neurosurgery with Professors Mundinger and Seeger in Freiburg.  Thereafter, he moved to Houston, Texas, to collaborate with Drs Grossman and Jankovic.  He went back to Europe to establish functional neurosurgery in Berne, Switzerland, and in Mannheim, Germany, where he served as Vice Chairman from 1999 to 2005.  He became Associate Professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and served as Adjunct Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine,Houston, Texas.  His clinical routine includes functional neurosurgery, complex spine, skull base, microvascular decompression, neurooncology and hydrocephalus.

Prof. Krauss has been President of the European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN) from 2010 to 2014, and of the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN) from 2013 to 2017.  He also served as President of the German Academy for Neurosurgery from 2018 to 2019.  He is Head of the Commission for Technical Standards of the DGNC since 2007. Furthermore, he is an active member of several international societies, committees and advisory boards. One of his missions is to bridge the gap between Neurosurgery and Neurology why he is also active in the Movement Disorders Society where he served as Chair of the Task Force Neurosurgery and as Co-Chair of the Task Force Deep Brain Stimulation for Dystonia.  He currently serves as Co-Chair of the MDS Study Groups Neuromodulation for Gait and Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

He has published more than 600 scientific manuscripts and book chapters, and he has edited four books in the field of functional neurosurgery.  He introduced pallidal deep brain stimulation for cervical dystonia in 1997, and spinal cord stimulation for orthostatic tremor in 2002.  He received several awards including the Oppenheim prize for his work in dystonia.  He runs an active laboratory together with Professor Schwabe dedicated to the study of animal models of movement disorders and behaviour.  His current research interests include skull base approaches, microvascular decompression, and experimental and clinical studies on the treatment of movement disorders, with a special focus on dystonia, but also psychiatric disorders and other applications of deep brain stimulation.  In the past few years he put a particular focus on education and training. He is a member of the ESSFN training committee and chair of the WSSFN training committee
